Michael Barrett is Co-Founder and Associate Artistic Director of the New York Festival of Song and, with his wife, Leslie Tomkins, Co-Founder and Music Director of the Moab Music Festival in Utah. He served as CEO and General Director of the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, and as Artistic Director of the Tisch Center for the Arts at the 92nd Street Y in New York. A protégé of Leonard Bernstein, Michael has been a guest conductor with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, New York Philharmonic, London Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, and other orchestras around the world. He enjoys mentoring younger artists and participates annually in young artists programs at Caramoor and the Juilliard School. Recently, Michael joined the El Sistema program in Venezuela in a special program for the music of Aaron Copland. Michael was born in Guam and raised in California. He attended the University of California at Berkeley, and received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He did postgraduate work at the Hartt School of Music. He lives in New York City and Moab with his wife, Leslie, and their daughter, Emma.
